Oh Dear Maine!

Our legislature passed a Gay Marriage Act earlier this year. Now, sadly, by a citizens' initiative, we have voted to repeal this law.

I'm happily married and I can't for the life of me think that giving same-sex couples the same rights that my wife and I share in any way diminishes me or my marriage. In fact it enhances it because so many more people can share the same happiness and the ability to care for a loved one, that I have – which makes me very happy.

In any case – whatever the arguments – we are all human beings and citizens of the same country; we should all have the same rights, responsibilities and privileges, whatever our skin color, gender, sexuality, or any other facet of our humanity.

Why the mores and origin myths of a obscure bronze-age tribe of desert dwellers should still have any relevance today is a mystery to me. But there are those who believe that they do, and that's absolutely fine by me. But if they are so certain they are right, surely they are invincible – only they are going to an afterlife or whatever it is they believe in. What other people do can't change that surely? So why vote against giving us all marriage rights? It seems such a petty little short-sighted, small-minded, unnecessary thing to do.

So today I am sad.
