I found your design for the Deben 5-Tonner exciting because it looks to be the type boat I am considering building. As a single parent of teenage girls, the building is not scheduled for a couple years so I have time to wait for the plans. The price will be a big help with the budget as well.

I noticed what appears to be a tabernacle for stepping the mast. Will you also have provisions for a keel stepped mast?

I'm also a fan of a boomed staysail, less sheets to handle when alone.

I'm looking forward to following the design process.

Best wishes, Kevin

Hi Kevin

I'm glad you like the design.

A keel-stepped mast will indeed be an option. The rig will be the better for it.

No problem with a boom staysail – I'm a big fan of them myself. We will most likely have a club boom (i.e. a boom shorter than the foot of the sail) with a gooseneck pin dropping into a socket in the top of the sampson post. This automatically tightens the foot of the sail as you come on the wind, and gives it more draught as you square away.

Your time scale will probably just about match mine!
